Navigation (Pacing) Beads - 5Km

CA$5.00

Taught to me during Reserve Training, these pacing beads are used for calculating distance when navigating.  How it works.  You must first determine how many footsteps YOU use to travel 100 m.  Between two telephone poles is about 50 m.  Keep your footsteps realistic - what you think you'll be walking at in the bush after an hour!  Do this 3 times and take the average.  Let's say that average is 28 paces.  Then double it (50 m x 2 = 100m.  So  28 x 2 = 56)  So it takes 56 paces to travel about 100 m.  Yes, there are many variables - too many to teach here.  But you get the idea.

Start with both top and bottom beads pushed all the way to the top of their respective sections.  As you walk you count your paces.  For every 56 paces, drop a bottom bead (100m).  You will note that there are 9 beads on the bottom.  Once you have pulled down the last bottom bead (900m):  After you complete your next 56 paces you then pull down one of the top beads and you have travelled approximately 1 km.  Pull up all the bottom beads to start your next kilometer and repeat.  Safe travels!

These are modelled after the one provided to me by one of my instructors (which I still have! I use it to count other things now too, like if I'm trying to keep track of how much water I drink in a day...)
